Okavaga River

Okavango River

The Okavango River flows for 1,600 km (990 miles) and contains the only inland delta in the World. This particularly unique habitat is brought about by the hydrological influences of the river flowing through Namibia and Angola eventually reaching Botswana. The resultant delta is formed due to the marginal difference in elevation throughout much of its long journey.

The flooding waters create a seemingly endless area of lagoons, winding rivers, oxbow lakes, floodplains and papyrus islands within the Okavango delta. The area is vast and at its largest covers well over 16,000 square kilometres.

The area is rich in diversity with a truly remarkable ecosystem which facilitates a massive nursery area for prey species. The delta water area is reduced seasonally by over 7000 square kilometres and it is this time when the displaced prey species are at their most vulnerable. The tigerfish await these conditions and, with a massive density of preyfish present, the large predatory tigerfish feed aggressively.

Between September and November the waters recede off the vast Okavango flood plains and force recently spawned bait fish from the relative security of the vegetation rich plains into a most dangerous habitat, the main Okavango River.

This phenomenon results in a fierce feeding frenzy with vast quantities of predator fish pursuing a seemingly inexhaustible source of prey fish.
These frenzies are commonly referred to as “catfish runs” and are often termed the fresh water equivalent of the wildebeest migration. Our quarry is not the catfish but the tigerfish which are numerous during this period and provide exciting and challenging fishing with the area attracting discerning fly-fishers from all around the World.

Our Go Active Fishing team, in conjunction with local guides, have over 18 years’ experience in the region and will guide you expertly providing you with unparalleled fly-fishing.

There are of course other species available including catfish, nembwe, thin faced largemouth and a host of other bream species.

The favoured rod length is a 9ft with a line rating of  8/9 with a 300G or 350G sink tip line (Sonar Sink Warm 300 or 350). The favoured leader is a 6ft straight 30lb Maxima monofilament line.

Lures are clousers, whistlers, bruch flies. Size #1. Black and purple, black and red, black and orange. A full tackle list is available on booking.

Go Active Fishing guests are accommodated in the exclusive Xaro Safari Lodge which is a well-established tented lodge with 8 spacious en suite meru tents sleeping 2 guests each. The Lodge is located in the Shakawe region in the Western Pan Handle of the Okavango Delta, on the main Okavango channel. From the lodge you have the opportunity to fish the Okavango River as well as the numerous pristine lagoons situated close by.

The tents have been specially designed with glass doors in the front of the tent. Each tent is on Leadwood decks and all have views of the Okavango River. Meals are served and enjoyed in the dining area overlooking the river.
The living area consists of an inside bar dining area which contains plug points for charging batteries, cameras and laptops. There is also a beautiful lounge area under trees outside overlooking the river. The lodge also boasts a swimming pool for midday swims and for those who want to take some time off fishing and simply soak up the Okavango sun. There is an outside fire place overlooking the river – the perfect place for evening sundowners.

FU9A9271-LGo Active Fishing has, along with our local guides, pioneered the mobile approach to fishing the catfish run. Guests may want to experience following the catfish run and to this end we offer the opportunity to camp on the many safe islands within the Okavango delta. This has proved to be an excellent choice with guests availing themselves of wonderful fishing without the need to spend precious time finding the tiger fish. Guests can also fish into sunset without the need to return to Xaro Lodge.
