Patagonia

Go Active Fishing is delighted to have secured exclusive fishing in Patagonia for our guests. We are also privileged to have obtained the services of some of the best guides in the region and we are confident that this arrangement will guarantee our guests exceptional fishing in this land of turquoise lakes, glaciers and wonderful unspoilt mountain terrain. Patagonia is shared  between Argentina and Chile and is truly one of the most sought after destinations for trout fly fishermen.

This vast paradise is like stepping back in time with large areas of indigenous forest scarcely inhabited by man with pristine lakes and glaciers  dispersed within its volcanic landscape. This coming together of nature has resulted in the optimum conditions necessary for wild trout and this is why Patagonian trout rivers and lakes are so revered by international fly fishers.

Go Active Fishing has chosen to base our fishing in the lake district of Patagonia (Los Lagos) where the famous waters of Lago Yelcho are. Its fjord like formation makes it one of the most awe inspiring places a fly fisher will ever experience.

Brown trout, rainbow trout and brook trout are resident in these waters with an autumnal run of king salmon up the Rio Yelcho.

The fishing season runs from mid-November until the beginning of May. The seasons may vary and are set annually by government but Go Active Fishing will advise prior to departure. December through to February produces excellent fishing with spectacular autumnal fishing in March and April.

The weather in this region is highly unpredictable and as such all eventualities must be covered with layered clothing (Neutral Colours) the order of the day.

A 9ft rod, AFTM 5-6 and floating line are ideal for dry fly fishing on Lake Yelcho with the deeper areas of the lake requiring intermediate or sinkers if you wish to try streamers. Leaders in these areas should be from 6-8 lbs and at least 9ft in length.

The Rio Yelcho requires a fast action 9ft 7-wt rod with a floating line recommended for casting large streamers under the bank foliage on the drift. A short heavy leader of 5-6ft  is useful to keep the fish out of the underwater structure encountered along the river   banks. These areas are particularly favoured by the larger trout.

The flies required are traditional to the area with large foam patterns like the Chernobyl Ant , Fat Albert and Rance’s Gypsy King which represents large stonefly species which inhabit the rich environment of Lake Yelcho and the Rio Yelcho.

The most productive dry fly on the lake appears to be the extended foam bodied dragonfly but our guides will advise on patterns and tactics required.

Streamers in light and dark colours are used for deep areas like drop offs and cliff edges with sinking and intermediate lines.
