Costa Rica

New Opportunity Jungle Tarpon

You won't find a definition for this in a dictionary, but the phrase has become a talking point in fly fishing circles. There are not many fisheries in the world where you can target large tarpon in small jungle streams and flooded grasslands - especially when these streams and floodplains are hundreds of miles from the ocean.  In Costa Rica there is such a place - a true fly fishing heaven.

Growing to epic proportions, it’s not unusual to see schools of hunting fish well into the triple digits. This is without a doubt one of the world’s finest  flyfishing trophy tarpon destinations, and one that has managed to stay just below the radar
The fishery consists of a vast freshwater system where the tarpon stack up in creeks and streams and cruise the flooded lagoons feeding heavily on the rich baitfish that the area offers.
Besides the unique environment in which these tarpon are found, the fishery is becoming a conservation success story. The fishery only allows four anglers per week, and only 2 weeks are fished each month of the short season, with full moon periods being used as a rest period for the fishery. Every action of this operation is carried out with the aim of preserving this unique fishery.
Understandably, space is severely limited. We have managed to secure the last 2 rods available for 2017. This is a chance to come and experience a true fly fishing frontier.

Go Active Fishing  is very pleased to offer exclusive fishing in Costa Rica. Costa Rica has long been a destination of choice for anglers with a sense of adventure. The Tarpon or as it is known locally the "Silver King", for which Costa Rica is famous, is just a most wonderful fish which will test  an anglers resolve and skill and keeps them returning to this part of the world year after year.

The Rio Colorado, just south of the Nicaragua border, is considered the home of the Tarpon. Annually large numbers of Tarpon congregate at the mouth of the Colorado to feed aggressively on their preferred prey, herring, which are super abundant during Sept and October.

The majority of tarpon run to 60-180 lbs and each year a number of fish are taken up to 200lbs.

The fishing takes place adjacent to the river mouth, or where the freshwater and saltwater mix.

The fishing is extremely exciting with rolling tarpon agressively feeding on herring. It is not uncommon to cast a fly to upwards of 30 feeding tarpon at any one time and these fish are certainly very aggressive with a take and the fight is never forgotten. This is fishing as it should be.

Go Active Fishing has chosen the Rio Colorado Tarpon Camp as our accommodation base in Costa Rica. The camp is a comfortable family run guest house on the lower reaches of the Rio Colorado.
