DAY 1 – ARRIVE AUCKLAND

Kia Ora – Welcome to New Zealand and Auckland – City of sails. Meet with your guide at Auckland airport and transfer to your waterfront accommodation. Overlooking Auckland Harbour, the Hilton Hotel is centrally located, recover from a long flight and prepare for a busy week ahead.

DAY 2 – AUCKLAND

Spend a full day in Auckland with your guide, today is set aside to purchase any last minute gear and prepare for the trip. During the day we fit in a trip to Goat Island Marine Reserve on the Leigh coastline. Just 1 hour drive North of Auckland, Goat Island is an example of how the oceans surrounding New Zealand used to be. The breeding ground for marine life, there is the opportunity to snorkel amongst snapper, crayfish, blue cod to name a few of the many species.

As the marine reserve is protected the marine life is abundant in the Leigh area.

Return to Auckland and sample New Zealand’s range of seafood at one of Auckland’s prime seafood restaurants.

DAY 3 – AUCKLAND TO ROTORUA

We leave the city of sails today and travel through the middle of the North Island to the geothermal region. New Zealand is well known for ever changing landscapes with the bubbling mudpools and steaming vents of the Rotorua and Taupo region being one of the more dramatic changes. During the day we spend time at nearby Wai-o-tapu thermal park walking amongst the vibrant Sulphur pools and boiling bubbling hot pools. The central North Island region is also a great place to experience Maori culture. This evening is spent at a traditional Maori village with a ‘Powhiri’ welcome, cultural experiences and a hangi cooked amongst hot stones in the ground.

DAY 4 – ROTORUA FLY FISHING DAY

Some of the best conditioned rainbow and brown trout can be found in the back country of the Rotorua area. The best way to get the most out of a wild fishing day is access by helicopter. Take in the views of the central volcanic area before touching down around the back country rivers and streams. Your professional guide will check the best location suited to the current conditions as the weather can be quite variable. Return to civilization and Lake Tarawera for a unique experience, the unique geothermal features of the North Island warm up the lakes and beaches. Our meal later today is our catch cooked in the hot sand.

DAY 5 – ROTORUA TO QUEENSTOWN

Sadly it’s time to say good bye to the North Island and head to Queenstown for our South Island Fly fishing adventure. Today’s include flight travels most of the length of New Zealand to the Southern Lakes region and the resort town of Queenstown. Set alongside the shores of Lake Wakaitpu which is home to Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Salmon, Queenstown is also well known for other activities which there is free time to experience this afternoon. There are many restaurants and eateries in town to spend time this evening.

DAY 6 – QUEENSTOWN TO TE ANAU/FIORDLAND

This morning we travel towards Te Anau – the gateway to Fiordland and one of the most remote areas of New Zealand. Our base for the next couple of days is Fiordland Lodge, just outside of Te Anau. We arrive in time for lunch and to meet up with local guides for half a day fly fishing. The crystal clear waters of Fiordland and unpolluted waterways offer excellent conditions for wild Brown or Rainbow trout. There are a number of rivers and streams within 1.5 hours drive from the lodge. Dinner is included this evening back at the lodge.

DAY 7 – FIORDLAND FISHING DAY

Experience a full day in Fiordland fly fishing. With over 40 streams and rivers in the area, the remoteness of Fiordland offers a prime experience in wild fishing. Ranging from small spring fed streams to moderate rivers, our local guides will show us the best locations for fishing with access to some of the local farmland for the best access to the river and stream banks. Catch and release is widely practiced widely in Fiordland to keep the wild fishing stocks going. We return back to Fiordland lodge for dinner.

DAY 8 – TE ANAU TO WANAKA

This morning is free for an optional excursion to Milford Sound. The best way to see the Fiordland area is by helicopter. Take a breath taking flight to Milford Sound with a landing on a nearby glacier before taking in views of the fjord and iconic Mitre Peak. On the way back we make a second landing at Lake Quill and enjoy a picnic of local Fiordland crayfish and craft beer. Return back to Te Anau to meet up with the guide again and travel to the lakeside resort of Wanaka. Helicopter excursion is weather dependent, anyone not wanting to helicopter has free time in Te Anau during the morning. The guide is available for transport and short walks in the area.

A full day to fly fish in the remote areas surrounding Wanaka. Your local guide will take us to the best spots depending in the weather on the day for the best fishing. The rivers and lakes of the Wanaka area offer challenging but rewarding wild fishing experiences, a real trout hunt!
