Go Active Fishing has put together a wonderful fly-fishing experience with some of the region’s best known and respected guides while also securing accommodation which can only be described as exceptional
Go Active Fishing is privileged to offer our clients fly fishing on the Mooi and Bushman’s Rivers , approximately 50 minutes’ drive from our base.
This area provides some of the most spectacular fly fishing opportunities for those who are looking to find undiscovered and ecologically intact areas where wild brown trout are abundant in clear mountain waters.
These wild fish are spectacular and strong due to their exceptional condition making the pursuit of them a genuinely difficult task testing the most experienced angler. Trout were introduced to southern Africa over one hundred years ago and, with abundant feeding and a lack of natural predators, have thrived in the suitable habitat.
Trout are now considered to be a part of the cold river systems of South Africa and have given the region an economic boost through fly fishing tourism.
Fly patterns used in southern Africa are generally representative of local macro-invertebrate communities with various mayfly, caddis, midge and stonefly patterns proving successful.
There are a large number of patterns for trout due to the abundant fly life which inhabit the regions rivers and the choice of pattern can be the difference between success and failure. Our expert guides will advise on the best patterns and tactics to use.
The best time of the year to visit the Drakensberg mountains is in the period March to May when the brown trout are in exceptional condition and are particularly active. While some fishing is possible in December and January it is not optimum with high temperatures and too much water flow from summer rains. The rivers are closed in the June -August period.
Wading is preferred with a pair of good grip wading shoes/boots essential. Boots cannot be supplied by our guides so it is essential you bring suitable boots / shoes or purchase them locally. Wading is moderately difficult and may not be suitable for physically challenged individuals.
Rod choice varies but all eventualities are catered for with an AFTM 000 wt to 3 wt with rod length from 6ft to 10ft favoured. A floating line is sufficient for all our locations and conditions. Leader length and strength can be advised by our guides but a standard 9 / 12 / 15ft 4X / 5X / 6X leader out of the packet will suffice. Equipment can be rented if required.
Go Active Fishing is respectful of the local ecosystem and indeed the consistent attraction of southern African fly-fishing waters is the unspoilt ecology of the locations, the wilderness experience and the great condition of the fish. These conditions are only sustainable if fly-fishers practise sensitive, eco-friendly fishing.
Go Active Fishing operates a strict policy of catch and release in order that stocks can be maintained at optimal levels to guarantee the continuation of this ecologically friendly sport.
The fish you release is a present to future generations and a giving back to nature of a precious resource.
Fishing groups are restricted to two persons but this may also be part of a larger group encompassing non fishing individuals. The is to maintain the pristine nature of the environment and not to overcrowd these small rivers.
Go Active also operates a policy of "Leave no Trace" which leaves the region unspoilt. Keep to tracks and take home only photographs thus leaving the area as you found it.
