Mnyera and Ruhudji Rivers
The Mnyera and Ruhudji Rivers encompass one of the last remaining frontiers of freshwater big game fishing.
The area is stunning and unspoilt with the most amazing fishing for Tiger Fish which regularly attain weights in excess of 20 lbs. The area also has many rare big game species as well as boasting a unique collection of rare and endemic birds.
The season runs from 1st August to 10th November and it is during these months, as the water temperatures rise and the clarity increases, that the large tigerfish of the Mnyera and Ruhudji rivers begin to feed aggressively.
The catch data reflects the wonderful opportunities that anglers have of taking large tigerfish on fly and the policy of rotating beats gives all anglers the opportunity to sample these wonderful rivers. In the recent past a further 30 km of waters have been opened up to allow our clients access to the headwaters and its unique wilderness ecosystem. Beats are rotated with seven individual beats available to our guests, providing a once in a lifetime experience.
Go Active Fishing always supports low impact and sustainable tourism in all areas under their management and the Tanzania project really is a perfect example of sustainability.
Our accommodation and fishing base is the Dhala Tiger Camp and this lodge undoubtedly offers some of the finest fresh water fly fishing in Africa.
The fishing takes place on both the Mnyera & Ruhudji river in the Kilombero Valley in South Central Tanzania.
Whilst the fishing is from the unique local Devil boats a reasonable degree of fitness is required to get the best from your trip. Two anglers share a boat with the guide in the middle and an angler at either end.
As always the fishing is strictly catch and release and with over 120 km of river to fish, and daily rotation of positions, the fish population is not adversely affected.
The species available are as follows:
Tigerfish(Hydrocynus tanzaniae) - August to November - up to 28lbs
Vundu Catfish(Heterobranchus longifilis) - August to November up to 200lbs
Yellowfish(Labeobarbus) - August to November 1 - 6lbs
All fishing is done during the dry-season period August - November
The rods required are 9ft 9wt Fast Action rod with 300-350 grain tropical sink tip lines. Leaders are generally 35-40lbs with 46lbs knottable wire tippet.
Lures required are any baitfish pattern tied on good quality 3/0 hooks. Brush Flies, Deceivers etc. All tied in dark natural colours.
All of the above mentioned can be bought or hired on request.
We can accommodate a maximum of 8 anglers per week, but smaller numbers can be accommodated
While Tigerfish are difficult fish to catch it is a chance of a lifetime to hook up with these fish. They have very bony mouths and many anglers fail to set the hook properly but with our expert guides and local knowledge you are assured of the proper methodology and being in the right place at the right time.
The challenge lies in keeping calm during the ferocious take and managing to get a positive hook-set. They are extremely strong fish and can give most saltwater fish a good run for their money in terms of fighting ability
Accommodation is usually on a shared basis but single supplement can be arranged. Meals are supplied including breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal.
